In 1976 the first letterman jackets were created by no other than Harvard University's baseball team. They wanted their star players to standout, and thus the letterman was created. Every player was given an embroidered 'H' jersey, and only those who played in the most important games of the season were allowed to keep and wear the uniforms (letterman). By 1875 Harvard's football team took note, and started to embroider their jerseys for the best athletes on the team.
Evolution: Over time the style transformed into pullovers and baseball tops, with the letter making its way to the left side of the chest. Stripes, stars, and pins were all added to represent different levels of achievement, exclusivity and rank. Soon, the sweater became a jacket with a boiled wool body and leather sleeves, and could be seen all over college and high school campuses.
Synonymous with exclusivity and athletic achievement the varsity jacket is iconic and symbolic of American Culture.
Whether you lettered or just love the classic look, check out how to style your letterman below.
The Minimal All-American
Staying true to your athletic background try pairing your jacket with leggings or joggers, your favorite sneakers and college/professional sports tee.
The Off-Duty Model
Step one, don't overthink. Act as if you have 15 minutes to get ready and you'll be able to perfect this look. Go for low rise boyfriend jeans, or loose shorts and a flowy tank. For your shoes keep it casual with sneakers or jazz it up with booties, and hit the streets like it's your runway.
Take your traditional nine-to-five outfit to the next level with wide leg trousers. If pants aren't your thing go for a pleated maxi skirt. Let your statement piece be your bag (think Chanel or Celiné). Try tucking in your favorite tee and add a choker for neck detail.
The Street Style Instagrammer
Start with your favorite pair of fitted denim or leather. Play with the shape by adding layers like a chambray shirt, or keep it classic with a simple t-shirt. A strappy sandal will instantly make you look effortlessly chic, remember less is more.
