Yesterday officially marked my one year anniversary of putting my body through insane, torturous, grueling, life changing, amazing workouts at Tone House NYC. I've taken 96 classes which in Tone House counting is really 96,000 classes and it still never. gets. easier.
Before I say anymore let me give you a brief synopsis about how I came across Tone House.
I had been living in the city for a month, when I saw this insanely fit man (guess who) walking down 14th street. I literally did a double take. I had no idea that there were fit people in New York! I had his image stuck in my head and remembered his shirt saying 'Tone House NYC'. Like I alway do I jotted this name down in my phone to research later. Once I got home I typed in the name which lead me to the studio's website.
I instantly knew that I had to try this workout. My biggest fear ending my collegiate career as a sprinter was that I was going to get out of shape and within 2 years be thirty pounds overweight. I was over not working, and wasn't really sure what I wanted to do so in the meantime I decided to write an email inquiring about a job.
Now, typically I wouldn't be as bold as I was, but I specifically remember stating that I would be the PERFECT addition to their studio because of my athletic background (hey worst thing that could happen was that they didn't reply). Within the hour I got a reply from Alonzo basically laughing at my bluntness telling me that I had to actually try the class before I got hired. If you know Alonzo you know that he wants real trainers that are capable of completing the workouts not just delivering them.
My first day was hell. I came in during the "up-back-and-drop" portion of the warmup and had to do an entire set by myself! I remember throughout the class thinking how out of shape I was. Only one month of being a retired All-American sprinter and I was struggling to get through this class. I've ran 15 x 300 meters with 2 minutes rest before and I could not feel my legs after this workout. I know what hard workouts are and this was definitely one of them.
& yet I kept coming back.
I kept training. I made friends (Charlene thank you for being my only friend for the first few months) and got better. Day in and day out. The circle drill became easier. I could do more than five pushups! My imbalances started to even out. I slowly started to make my way to the front of the warmup line, eventually leading it off every class I took and into Group One of the sprints. My BODY was transforming before my eyes.
Apparently Alonzo saw something special in me because he gave me the amazing opportunity to be apart of something innovative! But, I wasn't satisfied. I wanted to be the best me. I started to train five times a week, some days doing two-a-days.
The transformations I've made in this past year are astonishing. Lets start with emotionally:
After running for 15 years I lost my competitive edge. I was burned out. The more classes I started to take the more I felt that fire start to come back. The old Tamara who would never back down from a competition. Who could and would push through anything. The fighter. She was coming back.
Mentally, I was becoming stronger. I was defeating all the voices in my head telling me to quit, to leave, to stop, to give up. So many have allowed themselves to be defeated by those voices. You're not good enough...she's prettier than you, he's more successful. You aren't skinny enough, tall enough...you'll never be smart enough..you'll never make it. Tone House makes you face those voices straight on. From the moment you step into the room you're being challenged. Will you arise to the occasion when you're under stress? When your mind is giving out (your mind will quit before your body does). Will you conquer yourself? Conquer your fears, your doubts?
That's the best thing about Tone House. Not only are you transforming your body you're transforming your outlook on LIFE. I'm a firm believer that how you deal with tough situations in Tone House reflect how you deal with life.
Day in and day out I see people who are working towards various goals on their fitness journey. I get to see them transform the timid or sometimes egotistic personalities into dedicated ones. I see men and women alike gain confidence. I see you all learn to love yourself. I see you all learning to love your body, to love YOUR journey. Not anyone else's journey but YOURS. For what it is. I see people learn how to respect one another. To respect their bodies and their talents. I see a community, a family being built before my eyes, and I am beyond honored to be apart of it.
So for those of you who have heard about us, who are afraid to try us out. Please come. Tone House is not just a studio for former NCAA Division 1 athletes. For former professional athletes. Tone House is an environment for people who have goals. For people who want to be challenged like they've never been challenged before. For people who want to work hard. For people who are hungry to become better than they were yesterday. For people who want to belong to a community, a family. For those who aren't afraid of being vulnerable. Of failing, only to come back better and stronger. For those who are learning to love themselves. For grandmas, grandpas, first time mothers, brothers, friends, people who have never worked out in their life. Tone House does not discriminate.
TONE HOUSE IS FOR YOU.
It's 90% mental. You'd be surprised at the things you can do once you get out of your own way. The rest is being willing to be uncomfortable, to expose your weaknesses and build from there. It's not about the Instagram pictures at the end of the day. Yes, we love to share our results, but those likes mean NOTHING. Everyone's #TonehouseTransformation is different and the way we choose to share it may vary. At the end of the day It's about allowing yourself to push your limits for one hour, without feeling self-conscious, without worrying about the outside world in a room of people who only want you to be the best you. One hour to channel all the mayhem living in this city brings. One opportunity for that hour to leave it all on the turf.
Tone House has truly changed my life. I have met some of the most amazing people and Athlete's this city has to offer. Cheers to one year and many more to come!
P.S. I would love it if you all shared your Transformations with the hashtag #TonehouseTransformation
